Altar of St. Laurence Church, Norwich, England photograph

The photograph shows the altar of a church with a priest standing and two acolytes kneeling before him. The handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads "S. Laurence, Norwich." The image appears to be hand coloured with vibrant red for the robes, pink and purple for the altar screen cloths, and blue and gold for the banners on each side of the altar.

The photograph collection consists of 500+ b&w, colour, and sepia, and digital photographic images, including prints and a small number of negatives. Some images were created by or relate to St. Peter's Cathedral Church and its activities. Others appear to have been donated by members of the church because the images depict some event or topic relevant to the church's history. The collection will continue to expand as new photographs are added, with full provenance and copyright information captured whenever possible.

The portrait shows a man sitting in a three-quarter-length pose, with his arms crossed, holding a piece of paper. The front of the image shows the name and address of the British photographer Samuel A. Walker, at 64 Margaret St. Cavendish Square. The front also shows "Registered 25 & 26 Vic. C. 68" in reference to the "Creating Fine Arts Copyright Act of 1862."

Handwritten on the back of the image is the name "Richard". No further identifying information is available.

The photograph is a full-length portrait of an unidentified young acolyte. At the bottom right is the name of the studio "W and A.H. Fry, Photos" and on the left their location "Brighton". No further identifying information is available.

Dr. Edward Bouverie Pusey portrait

The photograph is a seated portrait of Dr. Pusey. Printed on the front on the lower left is the word "Copyright" and on the lower right the word "registered." Printed in the middle of the front is "Dr. Pusey." Research shows that Edward Bouverie Pusey (22 August 1800 – 16 September 1882) was an English churchman who served for more than fifty years as Regius Professor of Hebrew at the University of Oxford. He was a major promoter of the Oxford Movement.

Mr Ralph Brecken Peake portrait

The photograph is a full-length portrait of Ralph Brecken Peake. A handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads "R. B. Peake, an early member of the church." Research indicates that Ralph Peake (ca. 1845-1879) was the son of James Ellis Peake (1797-1860), who arrived in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, from Plymouth, England, in 1824 and established himself as a shipowner, shipbuilder, and merchant. James married Barbara Leila Alice Brecken in 1838, and they had at least six children: Elizabeth, Alice Brecken, James Jr., George, Ralph Brecken, and Fanny.

Due to his ill health, James and his family returned to Plymouth in 1856, and James died England in 1860. Ralph Peake returned to Prince Edward Island with his mother in 1866 and married Matilda Haviland. He was partner in Peake Bros. & Company until his death on 11 January 1879 at the age of 34.

St. Peter's Cathedral Church 19th-century photographs

The file consists of 44 prints of clergymen, women, other men associated with St. Peter's Cathedral Church, and interior and exterior images of churches in England. Many of these images appear to be "cartes-de-visite," a type of small photograph, often the same size as a visiting card, which was traded among friends and visitors, particularly in the 1860s. People would collect cards and put them into containers or albums and put them on display.

One handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads: "For dear Aunt Jane, 1st May 1867" and a second note, in different handwriting, reads "Mrs. Edward Hodgson." The image is the same as b&w photograph PHOTO 0089.

The Anglican Missal (SPCA 016 Item 1), created in memory of Mrs. Edward Hodgson, provides additional confirmation of her name.
