The photograph is a full-length portrait of Reverend Joseph Newton Smith. The handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads "Rev. Newton Smith Harlow." In 1868 Smith was named as vicar to St. Mary Magdalene, Harlow. Smith was also a founding member of the Society of the Holy Cross.

Some images were created by or relate to St. Peter's Cathedral Church and its activities. Others appear to have been donated by members of the church because the images depict some event or topic relevant to the church's history. The collection will continue to expand as new photographs are added, with full provenance and copyright information captured whenever possible.
