The Altar Service Book, published in 1867, is a 38 x 26 x 3.5 bound book, edited by the Reverend Frederick George Lee, DCL, FSA (1832–1902), a theological writer born at Thame, Oxfordshire, who was ordained deacon by the bishop of Oxford in 1854 and priest in 1856.

The full title of the publication is: Altar Service Book, According to the Use of the United Church of England and Ireland/ The Order for the Administration of the Holy Communion, to which are Prefixed the Tables of Feasts and Fasts, and Kalendar, with the Collects, Epistles and Gospels, to be used throughout the year; Also the order for Confirmation of Children, and the Form for the Solemnization of Holy Matrimony; Together with the Form and Manner of Making, Ordaining, and Consecrating of Bishops, Priests and Deacons, According to the Use of the United Church of England and Ireland. With the Ancient Plain Song for the Holy Communion. The publication is apparently three volumes but there is only one volume in this accession.

Included with the book is a note, by James Simpson, from sometime after September 1918, reading "This book was used in the Altar of St. Peter's Cathedral from the early days of the church until September 1918." As well, a piece of string has been retained: it is presumably the string used to tie the book during its use.

This book appears to be a draft of the Book of Common Praise hymn book being developed by the Hymnal Compilation Committee for use in the Church of England in Canada. It is understood that Reverend Canon James Simpson was a member of the committee, but his name does not appear on the list of committee members on p. v. of the publication. His signature appears at the top of the title page.

The inside cover has a bookplate of George Wright Hodgson. and the opposite page is signed George W. Hodgson from Mrs. Banon. 18th August 1857. The title page of the publication is inscribed with "G.W.H.", presumably his initials.

The title page is stamped "Library of Dr. Bray's Associates".

According to various sources, Dr. Thomas Bray (1656-1730) was an English reverend who created a system of parochial libraries in many of the thirteen American colonies. He was educated at All Souls' College of Oxford, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1678; he later received a doctorate in divinity at Oxford. Bray was ordained to the Church of England and later chosen to travel to the Province of Maryland to serve as Commissary (representative of the Church). He devoted himself to establishing parochial libraries in the colonies.

This stamp suggests the book was circulated as part of Dr. Bray's library system. How it came into the collection of St. Peter's Cathedral Church is unknown.

This children's book includes a bookplate that reads "St. Peter's Boys' School -- Presented to R. Clare Harris". "Awarded as a "prize for Arithmetic and Tables". The bookplate is signed James Simpson [M. A.] Headmaster.

The book is a distillation of the best-selling children's book The History of Sandford and Merton (1783–89), written by Thomas Day, which was notable for its portrayal of "good morals" in children.

This bible was used by the congregation at St. Mark's Anglican Church, Rustico, Prince Edward Island. The leather cover is embossed with a wreath which says "British and Foreign Bible Society"
