Holy Bible containing the Old and New Testaments

The bible was presented to Camp Kingston in June 1988 and was donated to the Archives by Lois MacLaren via Gloria Jay. Two embroidered bookmarks and a typed "historical note" about the Beer family were included with the bible. The typed note reads as follows:

"Historical Note.

In 1832 George Beer, his wife Sarah, and their ten children, the eldest of whom (George) was married to Mary Ann Holland, emigrated from Barnstable, Devon, to Prince Edward Island. On December 24, 1832 a son was born to George and Mary Ann and he was christened George Robert. In May 1855 George Robert Beer married Leonora Ann Weatherbie, in Boston, Mass. and this Bible, printing date 1854, was their Family Bible. They had ten children, of whom one daughter, Mary Ella and five sons survived.

Mary Ella Married Joseph Robinson Brecken and they had a son, who died unmarried, and a daughter, Winifred Ella, who married John Orlebar Hyndman. To them was born a daughter, Constance Vimy, who married Alan Gordon Macmillan, present members of St. Peter's Cathedral, Charlottetown. Of the five sons only three have descendents [sic] living today: Mrs. Constance Lastewka of Vegreville, Alberta, with no children; Mrs. Leonora Powell, of Victoria, British Columbia, with two daughters, both married; Bessie Beer, unmarried, in the Atlantic Baptist Nursing Home, Charlottetown and a member of St. Paul's Church; Betty Jean Beer, unmarried, living in London, England, but, visiting Prince Edward Island annually.

From the 1830's this family were successful merchants in Charlottetown, Centreville Bedeque and Southport. They played a prominent part in civic affairs, as Justices of the Peace, members of the Legislative Assembly, City Councillors [sic] and members of the Local Militia. In 1877 Colonel Henry Beer was Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and in 1885-6 he was Mayor of the City of Charlottetown."

Right Reverend Bishop of Brechin portrait

The portrait is a full-length portrait of a man in clerical dress, identified as "The Right Revd the Bishop of Brechin." The image is also inscribed with "Photo & published by J. Valentine, Dundee." Research shows that the Bishop of Brechin from 1847 to 1875 was Alexander Forbes.

Reverend Joseph Newton Smith portrait

The photograph is a full-length portrait of Reverend Joseph Newton Smith. The handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads "Rev. Newton Smith Harlow." In 1868 Smith was named as vicar to St. Mary Magdalene, Harlow. Smith was also a founding member of the Society of the Holy Cross.

The photograph is a full-length portrait of Reverend Father Abbot. The handwritten note on the back reads "Rev. Father Abbot, Christ Ch. Clapham." Research shows that a Reverend Bradley Abbott was the first vicar of Christ Church, Clapham, England, in 1867.

The photograph shows the altar of a church with a priest standing and two acolytes kneeling before him. The handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads "S. Laurence, Norwich." The image appears to be hand coloured with vibrant red for the robes, pink and purple for the altar screen cloths, and blue and gold for the banners on each side of the altar.

The portrait shows a man sitting in a three-quarter-length pose, with his arms crossed, holding a piece of paper. The front of the image shows the name and address of the British photographer Samuel A. Walker, at 64 Margaret St. Cavendish Square. The front also shows "Registered 25 & 26 Vic. C. 68" in reference to the "Creating Fine Arts Copyright Act of 1862."

Handwritten on the back of the image is the name "Richard". No further identifying information is available.

The photograph is a full-length portrait of an unidentified young acolyte. At the bottom right is the name of the studio "W and A.H. Fry, Photos" and on the left their location "Brighton". No further identifying information is available.

Dr. Edward Bouverie Pusey portrait

The photograph is a seated portrait of Dr. Pusey. Printed on the front on the lower left is the word "Copyright" and on the lower right the word "registered." Printed in the middle of the front is "Dr. Pusey." Research shows that Edward Bouverie Pusey (22 August 1800 – 16 September 1882) was an English churchman who served for more than fifty years as Regius Professor of Hebrew at the University of Oxford. He was a major promoter of the Oxford Movement.

Mr Ralph Brecken Peake portrait

The photograph is a full-length portrait of Ralph Brecken Peake. A handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads "R. B. Peake, an early member of the church." Research indicates that Ralph Peake (ca. 1845-1879) was the son of James Ellis Peake (1797-1860), who arrived in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, from Plymouth, England, in 1824 and established himself as a shipowner, shipbuilder, and merchant. James married Barbara Leila Alice Brecken in 1838, and they had at least six children: Elizabeth, Alice Brecken, James Jr., George, Ralph Brecken, and Fanny.

Due to his ill health, James and his family returned to Plymouth in 1856, and James died England in 1860. Ralph Peake returned to Prince Edward Island with his mother in 1866 and married Matilda Haviland. He was partner in Peake Bros. & Company until his death on 11 January 1879 at the age of 34.
