Biografie

Edward Jarvis Hodgson was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, 29 July 1840. After studying law, he became a barrister in 1862 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1879. He completed work for the Prince Edward Island railway and other federal government departments between 1882 and approximately 1889. From 1891 until 1910, he was Master of the Rolls and an Assistant Judge of the Supreme Court of Judicature of Prince Edward Island, and from 1896 until his death in 1911, Chancellor of King's College University.

Geschiedenis beheer

The Edward Jarvis Hodgson Archives form part of the St. Peter's Cathedral Church archives, which were relocated from the church bell tower to the church basement and then into a purpose-built archival room. The records had been stored in boxes and bags at one point and original order was lost.

Bereik en inhoud

The archives consist of both personal and business records created or accumulated by Edward Jarvis Hodgson, including records related to the administration of St. Peter's Cathedral Church. A large portion of the archives relate to the operations of the Hodgson Trust, which was established after E.J. Hodgson's death, along with record of other trust accounts established during Hodgson's lifetime or after his death.

The file list provides details of the contents of the archives. Some of the names mentioned in the records, as shown in the file list, include the following: Thomas Handrahan, Matilda Peake, George Peake, Ralph Peake, Charles Wright, Charles Leigh (and wife), Edward Thomas Caswell, Margaret Brenan, Margaret Matilda Jane Hodgson (nee Brecken, Edward Hodgson's widow), Helen Brecken (and the Helen Brecken Memorial Trust.)

Ordening

A large portion of the archives relate to the operations of the Hodgson Trust, which was established after the death of Edward Jarvis Hodgson. Given the intricately close relationship between E. J. Hodgson, his brother George Wright Hodgson, first priest incumbent of St. Peter's, and St. Peter's Cathedral (the activities of which were funded in large part through trust funds set up during Hodgson's lifetime and after his death), the personal and trust-related records have been kept together, rather than separating them as two distinct archival units.
